Early Book Review: Heart and Brain: Onward to Good Things! by Nick Seluk

Heart and Brain: Onward to Good Things! by Nick Seluk is currently scheduled for release on May 2 2023. New York Times bestselling author Nick Seluk returns with a charming, hilarious, and inspirational book of comics in which his popular Heart and Brain characters fight through the world's gloom and uncertainty and march toward a brighter, more hopeful future. This book of comics directly addresses the mental health challenges we’ve been through collectively as a species, with specific illustrations and new content that help people feel understood, seen, and encouraged. Delivered with a humorous but sensitive touch, Onward to Good Things contains short graphic novel elements in three sections to tie together the themes and comics in one continuing short story that will help propel the author's millions of fans—and brand-new readers—toward a brighter and more laugh-filled future.
Onward to Good Things offers readers exactly what the blurbs promises, and fans of the characters will expect when picking up this title. While some of the panels seemed familiar to me, I think this format and larger collection on the artist's work will appeal to fans of the comic. I enjoyed the humor style and felt that it was consistent in style and quality. I liked the self awareness and honesty in the book, something that we could all use a little more of. I think everyone will find something to relate to in this book, but those that have recognized and embraced their own anxiety and self doubts will connect to it the most.

Early Book Review: Why Are You Like This? An ArtbyMoga Comic Collection by Meg Adams

Why Are You Like This?: An ArtbyMoga Comic Collection by Meg Adams is currently scheduled for release on March 7 2023. Finally, comics that answer life’s most pressing questions: Is my partner actually upset or just hangry? Whose turn is it to remember the reusable shopping bags? Is it appropriate to put up Halloween décor two months in advance? (Spoiler alert: Yes. Yes, it is.)  “Opposites attract” has never rung truer when it comes to vivacious extrovert Meg and her level-headed introvert husband, Carson. Carson makes his coffee with only the finest locally roasted beans; Meg microwaves two-day-old joe. Carson is reserved and rarely opens up to friends; Meg ensures everyone in her life—including her mailman—knows about her hemorrhoid. Dorky and downright hilarious, this book explores what it means to make fun of oneself and find laughter in the little things.
Why Are You Like This? is a fun collection of short comics that explores life and the adulthood none of us were ready for (honestly- no one is ever ready).  I have seen some of the artist's work before, so I already knew the style of artwork and humor before opening the book, and I was greeted by exactly what I was expecting. The book was funny and relatable, and the art style was consistent and heightened the intent and humor of each page. If you like the artist and their style this is a book you will enjoy. If you are an adult, new or otherwise,  or pretending to be an adult there will be at least some aspects of this book you will relate to and find amusing. 

Early Book Review: Cryptid Club by Sarah Andersen

Cryptid Club by Sarah Andersen is currently scheduled for release on September 20 2022. Do you hate social gatherings? Dodge cameras? Enjoy staying up just a little too late at night? You might have more in common with your local cryptid than you think! Enter the world of Cryptid Club, a look inside the adventures of elusive creatures ranging from Mothman to the Loch Ness Monster. This humorous new series celebrates the unique qualities that make cryptids so desperately sought after by mankind (to no avail). After all, it's what makes us different that also makes us beautiful.

Cryptid Club is a fun and entertaining read. I have enjoyed collections from Andersen before, and I thought the art style and sense of humor held true to what I have seen in the past, and always connected with. I thought the cartoons touched on a full gambit of emotions. Some were cute, others funny, and some were a little sad. However, they all entertained and had a bit of truth or understanding in them. I was entertained and felt like Andersen shared more than a few thoughts and experiences with me, making me feel a little bit more seen and less alone. I think that is a huge achievement for something so fun and enjoyable to read. 


Early Book Review: Everything Is OK by Debbie Tung

Everything Is OK
 
by Debbie Tung is currently scheduled for release on September 6 2022. It is the story of Debbie Tung’s struggle with anxiety and her experience with depression. She shares what it’s like navigating life, overthinking every possible worst-case scenario, and constantly feeling like all hope is lost. In this graphic memoir, Debbie aims to provide positive and comforting messages to anyone who is facing similar difficulties or is just trying to get through a tough time in life. She hopes to encourage readers to be kinder to themselves, to know that they are not alone, and that it’s okay to be vulnerable because they are not defined by their mental health struggles. The dark clouds won’t be there forever. Everything will turn out all right.

Everything Is OK is a great read for anyone that has struggled with any kind of depression or anxiety, or loves someone who has. Sometimes just knowing you are not alone, that there are others that have been through similar struggles and come out the other side gives hope and a bit of peace. I think this graphic memoir does a great job of illustrating one person's struggle- both in accepting that their problems are enough to deserve help. I also like that it seems clear that eveyone's experience and journey dealing with mental health can be different. I agree with the idea that none of us really know what we are doing, and feel inadequate, awkward, or simply bad about ourselves sometimes. It is learning how to treat ourselves with the same care and respect we give others, and giving ourselves the grace that we would give our loved ones, that allows us to keep moving forward and be happier, better people all around. We are enough, each and every one of us. It is sometimes had to believe about myself, but it is soothing to know I am not alone in that doubt, and that I can make steps to do better in caring for myself.

Everything Is OK is a powerful, engaging, and relatable read. Those suffering from depression and/or anxiety can see some of themselves in the story and those that want to better understand how those of us dealing with it feel so they can better empathize and support the people in their lives that do. 

Early Book Review: Gender Queer: A Memoir Deluxe Edition by Maia Kobabe

Gender Queer: A Memoir Deluxe Edition by Maia Kobabe is currently scheduled for release on June 21 2022. This special deluxe hardcover edition of Gender Queer features a brand-new cover, exclusive art and sketches, a foreword from ND Stevenson, Lumberjanes writer and creator of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and an afterword from Maia Kobabe.

In 2014, Maia Kobabe, who uses e/em/eir pronouns, thought that a comic of reading statistics would be the last autobiographical comic e would ever write. At the time, it was the only thing e felt comfortable with strangers knowing about em. Then e created Gender Queer. Maia’s intensely cathartic autobiography charts eir journey of self-identity, which includes the mortification and confusion of adolescent crushes, grappling with how to come out to family and society, bonding with friends over erotic gay fan fiction, and facing the trauma and fundamental violation of pap smears. Started as a way to explain to eir family what it means to be nonbinary and asexual, Gender Queer is more than a personal story: It is a useful and touching guide on gender identity—what it means and how to think about it—for advocates, friends, and humans everywhere.

Gender Queer is a great read for everyone. I think that readers questioning where they fall in the gender and sexuality spectrum and trying to find the words for how they feel will find comfort and relatability to the worries and fears that Maia has. I think all readers can relate to at least some of those worries, particularly the balance between fitting in or not being a bother with being comfortable with yourself. I think this an important read, not just to show people they are not alone in their thoughts, feelings, and worries but in helping those that might never have felt or acknowledged them what other people might be feeling. The importance of being yourself, even as you are trying to figure out the shape and terms that might best describe it, is important and something everyone needs to embrace. I think this book is a great read for everyone. I think the art does a great job of capture the struggle, and the successes, along the way while showing that  the journey is still underway.

Book Review: Scaredy Squirrel Gets a Surprise by Melanie Watt

Scaredy Squirrel Gets a Surprise by Melanie Watt is the second graphic novel in the series. Scaredy does NOT like surprises, he is a squirrel who likes a schedule, predictability, nothing unexpected. So, what’s inside the mysterious crate? Turns out it’s a POOL! Scaredy imagines sharks, eels, and algae! He prepares safety rules! Luckily his friends Ivy, Timber, and newcomer Rash are happy to remind him of another important rule, having fun!
Scaredy Squirrel Gets a Surprise is exactly what fans of the character and his series are looking for and expect. The artwork is consistent with past books, charming and funny at the same time. I like that the story is easy to follow for some of the youngest readers, while still having some inside jokes and humor for older readers. I love the balance of fun with the teaching of coping skills, dealing with anxiety, and facing new things on a level that everyone can learn from without feeling like we are being taught a lesson. Fans of this neurotic squirrel and the author will love the read and look forward to whatever might be coming next.

Early Audio Book Review: Book of Knowing and The Book of Overthinking: Dr. Know's Guide to Untangling Your Brain by Gwendoline Smith, Narrated by Liza Seneca

Book of Knowing and The Book of Overthinking: Dr. Know's Guide to Untangling Your Brain was written by Gwendoline Smith, and the audiobook version is narrated by Liza Seneca. It is currently scheduled for release on May 10 2022. 

This is a collection of the works of Dr. Know that provides a little guide to your big feelings. Clinical psychologist Dr. Gwendoline Smith (AKA Dr. Know) provides an informative and accessible guide to understand and manage your feelings. The Book of Knowing contextualizes the basics of cognitive behavioral therapy for anyone new to these concepts. In The Book of Overthinking, Dr. Know expands on the topics of overthinking, ruminating, and worrying — common symptoms of anxiety. By using her clear advice and tangible examples, you'll find powerful strategies for addressing these issues in your life.

I thought both The Book of Knowing and The Book of Overthinking were easy to follow, understand, and connect with. Anyone that has struggled with getting caught in a thought loop of depression or anxiety will recognize that spiral as what she using cognitive behavioral therapy to help readers recognize and overcome. I really like how upfront she is about how sometime life is going to throw bad things our way, because it happens, but helps us recognized what we do and do not have control over and taking the time to process the facts over the initial emotional response can make all the difference. I do wish I had read something like The Book of Knowing when I was in high school or college, it would have been very helpful to me at that point in my life. This book is honestly geared more toward young and new adults, although the advice and information is universal. The Book of Overthinking is aimed more at those of us that are no longer claim membership in those age groups, but again the information is universal. There is a good deal of overlap in the two books, but as a big overthinker myself perhaps hearing it twice will help me implement the tools and strategies offered in the book.  

Book of Knowing and The Book of Overthinking: Dr. Know's Guide to Untangling Your Brain was a great listen and I found it helpful and never condescending. There is humor, honesty, and understanding throughout. The narrator, Liza Seneca, did a wonderful job of capturing those emotions and the intent of the book in her performance. 

Early Book Review: Oddball: A Sarah's Scribbles Collection by Sarah Andersen

Oddball: A Sarah's Scribbles Collection by Sarah Andersen is currently scheduled for release on October 12 2021. This is the fourth book in this graphic novel series. This particular collection of Sarah's Scribbles comics explores the evils of procrastination, the trials of the creative process, the cuteness of kittens, and the beauty of not caring about your appearance as much as you did when you were younger. When it comes to humorous illustrations of the awkwardness and hilarity of millennial life, Sarah's Scribbles is without peer.

Oddball is exactly what fans of the artist will be looking for from this book. Her art style and humor is consistent and enjoyable. The perils of living as an artist, introvert, or anxious individual are portrayed well, and in ways most of us that fall into those categories can relate to. While some of the pages were familiar to me, since I follow the artist on social media, others were new. The humor is relatable on several levels, even if some of the generational jokes pretty much ignored the existence of generation x- but everyone does. I think fans will want to pick this up, or at least give it a read through. 

Oddball is not the first I have read from this collection, and hopefully it will not be the last. It offers humor and self awareness to all the socially awkward, anxious, and otherwise odd feeling introverts trying to survive day to day life. 


Early Book Review: What's Up, Beanie? by Alina Tysoe

What's Up, Beanie? by Alina Tysoe is a collection of 160 comics that is currently scheduled for release on August 3 2021. Eccentric and self-aware, Alina Tysoe, the pink-haired illustrator, captures relatable topics like family, the awkward pains of social anxiety, sweet moments of love and a growing relationship, amusing childhood stories, and her intense love of dogs. These endearing snapshots of Alina's life are surprisingly familiar, as if they've been taken from your own life: finding solace with a lone puppy at a crowded party, the frustration of deciding what to eat for dinner, making the mistake of hitting the snooze button, accidentally stepping on a dog's foot and feeling like a MONSTER, and tons more!

What's Up, Beanie? is a cute and relatable series of comic. I liked the art style, I found it to be fun and enjoyable to look at. I thought the situations and mood were something most readers can relate to on some level, especially the love of animals. Getting to go through some of Beanie's childhood and adult years was fun. I liked getting to see what growing up with two older sisters, and in her family dynamic, was like and how that differed from my own- even if the key moments of embarrassment and anxiety were consistent with my own. This was a really fun and engaging collection and I really enjoyed every minute of it. 

Early Book Review: Broken (in the best possible way) by Jenny Lawson

Broken (in the best possible way) is the third book by Jenny Lawson and is currently scheduled for release on April 6 2021. I have been a fan of Jenny Lawson since a coworker showed me her blog, and I was introduced to the joys of The Bloggess and tales of a giant metal chicken, taxidermied animals in interesting clothing and poses, and the stories she shared. As Jenny Lawson’s hundreds of thousands of fans know, she suffers from depression. In Broken, Jenny brings readers along on her mental and physical health journey, offering heartbreaking and hilarious anecdotes along the way. With people experiencing anxiety and depression now more than ever, Jenny humanizes what we all face in an all-too-real way, reassuring us that we’re not alone and making us laugh while doing it. From the business ideas that she wants to pitch to Shark Tank to the reason why Jenny can never go back to the post office, Broken leaves nothing to the imagination in the most satisfying way. And of course, Jenny’s long-suffering husband Victor—the Ricky to Jenny’s Lucille Ball—is present throughout. A treat for Jenny Lawson’s already existing fans, and destined to convert new ones, Broken is a beacon of hope and a wellspring of laughter when we all need it most.

I do not know what I can say to describe and recommend this book more than its own blurb. Jenny has shared her struggles, her stories, and herself with readers for years. I think now that so many more people are feeling shattered and broken in their own ways, that people are admitting to themselves and others that they could use some help, that this kind of honesty and humor is needed and appreciated. If you are looking for a linear memoir or nonfiction offering with perfect answers and a solid conclusion then this is not for you. However, if you want a book that offers an honest look at how hard it is to live with autoimmune disorders, depression, anxiety, and more with humor and a deep sense of understanding and camaraderie then this IS the book for you. Some of the stories I remember because I follow Jenny on social media, but none of it felt rehashed or recycled. I found myself laugh/crying in bed one night while I was reading this- which my cats did not appreciate. I really frond joy in some of the stories, secondary embarrassment in others, and a sense of 'that is something that would happen to me' in far too many. More than anything, the book offered a connection and hope, that no matter what none of us are the only one to being feeling a certain way, or fighting our own demons, even if we have somehow convinced ourselves and others that we are just fine. It also reminded me, that those people around me that I think have it all together, are dealing with something too- so lets all just be kind and help each other through life.

Early Book Review: The Knockout Rule by Kelly Siskind

Growing up with an adoring father for a boxing legend isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. It looks more like hospital visits, bloody noses, and cracked ribs. Isla Slade now works as a physiotherapist, helping athletes heal their bodies. Except for boxers. She has no interest in reliving the stress of her teen years. Dating someone in the boxing world? She’d rather snort wasabi powder. Until she meets Preston Church. Preston manages heavyweight boxing darling Brick Kramarov. A brute who’s built tougher than his name, with a cocky attitude to boot. She wants nothing to do with either man, but her father begs her to help them prepare for a huge fight. She doesn’t expect Preston to recite romantic poems and slowly break her resolve. His fascinating mind gets under her skin, even if his star athlete reminds her how much she hates boxing. Too bad it’s Brick coaching Preston how to woo Isla, falling for her from the sidelines. Once she finds out, she’ll have to decide if she can risk loving another man who puts it all on the line for the knockout.

The Knockout Rule has a lot less of the date coaching than the teaser implies, but it is used to good effect. I really liked Isla as a character, and her relationships with her father and best friend were well done, adding depth to the story. Eric (aka Brick) is similarly layered and complex as a character, and I honestly enjoyed getting to know them and the secondary characters. I thought the conflicts were very real, as were the fears, anxiety, and mental health complexities that challenged Isla and Eric. I do not know anything about boxing, but I do have to say that it felt like the characters were in Vegas forever before the fight. Do they really hang out that long before a fight? I just thought that some of that could have been condensed and spent more of the story in the heat of the conflict with details or character feelings, actions, and growth at that point. That being said, I really did enjoy the read and how even though there were secrets- Isla and Eric seemed to be honest with each other about their feelings and where they stand pretty quickly. It was a solid read, and I came to care about the characters and their families. 

The Knockout Rule is a good contemporary romance, with some twists but plenty of feels. 

Early Book Review: Ten Rules for Faking It by Sophie Sullivan

Ten Rules for Faking It 
by Sophie Sullivan is a contemporary romance currently scheduled for release on December 29 2020. What happens when your love life becomes the talk of the town? As birthdays go, this year’s for radio producer Everly Dean hit rock-bottom. Worse than the “tonsillectomy birthday.” Worse than the birthday her parents decided to split (the first time). But catching your boyfriend cheating on you with his assistant? But this is Everly’s year! She won’t let her anxiety hold her back. She’ll pitch her podcast idea to her boss. There’s just one problem. Her boss, Chris, is very cute. (Of course). Also, he's extremely distant (which means he hates her, right? Or is that the anxiety talking)? And, Stacey the DJ didn’t mute the mic during Everly’s rant about Simon the Snake (syn: Cheating Ex). That’s three problems. Suddenly, people are lining up to date her, Bachelorette-style, fans are voting (Reminder: never leave house again), and her interest in Chris might be a two-way street. It’s a lot for a woman who could gold medal in people-avoidance. She’s going to have to fake it ‘till she makes it to get through all of this. Perhaps she’ll make a list: The Ten Rules for Faking It. Because sometimes making the rules can find you happiness when you least expect it.

Ten Rules for Faking It is a sweet and fun read that took me out of the holiday and bad weather blues that have been trying to make themselves know way too often lately. I found there to be a good balance of humor, not all of the embarrassing moment kind, and more serious moments. Everly has social anxiety and parents that are  hard on her emotions, but she also has spunk and an outspoken best friend that will stand by her. Chris is still struggling with his father pulling strings, and needs to figure out what makes him happy. Watching them figure out their own wants, their own issues, and coming to terms with their feelings was quite the ride. I thought the characters were well written, with even the secondary characters having some depth and complexity. In fact, there are many of those secondary characters that I would like to see get their own story. While nothing was incredibly surprising, I saw most of the big twist-like moments coming a mile away, it was still a fun read.

Ten Rules for Faking It is a sweet and fun romance which handles the topic of anxiety with care and understanding.

Book Review: The Love Study (The Love Study) by Kris Ripper

The Love Study is the first book in a series by thee same name by Kris Ripper. Declan has commitment issues. He’s been an office temp for literally years now, and his friends delight in telling people that he left his last boyfriend at the altar.And that’s all true. But he’s starting to think it’s time to start working on his issues. When Declan meets Sidney, a popular nonbinary YouTuber with an advice show, an opportunity presents itself: as part of The Love Study, Declan will go on a series of dates arranged by Sidney and report back on how the date went in the next episode. The dates are sort of blah. It’s not Sidney’s fault; the folks participating are (mostly) great people, but there’s no chemistry there. Maybe Declan’s just broken. Or maybe the problem is that the only person he’s feeling chemistry with is Sidney.
The Love Study is a romance that does a good job of capturing the anxiety that is so much a part of daily life for so many, especially in the context of dating. Declan has fears, doubts, and all sorts of issues when in comes to confidence in himself and in his ability to have a successful relationship beyond those in his established freindgroup. Sydney is nonbinary with anxiety and worries of their own. I really enjoyed getting to know both of these characters, and the group of supportive people that are in their lives. This story felt so real, because the anxiety was more real than anything I remember reading in other romance. The conflict is not caused by outside forces, and something a simple conversation could fix forever in ten minutes. Instead the conflict is real emotion and self doubt, anxiety and fear of causing and feeling pain, and the solution is ongoing communication and commitment. I think this was more visceral and real than anything else. I think just about everyone has felt some of this, or had a similar internal dialogue to Declan at some point in their lives. I also liked how honest and real the discussions about gender, language choices, and consent were handled. This book was hard to read now and then, because I could physically feel Declan's anxiety in several situations. However, there were also moments that made me chuckle or smile at the sweetness and respect inherent in the characters. I am eager to read the next book in the series, The Hate Study, because two of my favorite secondary characters get to find love next.

The Love Study is a fabulous read that hits all the fears and handles anxiety, gender identity, and consent in the best ways.

Early Book Review: Better Than People by Roan Parrish

Better Than People by Roan Parrish is a contemporary romance currently scheduled for release on August 25 2020. Simon Burke has always preferred animals to people. When the countdown to adopting his own dog is put on hold, Simon turns to the PetShare app to find the fluffy TLC he’s been missing. Meeting a grumpy children’s book illustrator who needs a dog walker isn’t easy for the man whose persistent anxiety has colored his whole life, but Jack Matheson’s menagerie is just what Simon needs. Jack’s pack of rescue pets is the only company he needs. But when a bad fall leaves him with a broken leg, Jack is forced to admit he needs help. That the help comes in the form of the most beautiful man he’s ever seen is a complicated, glorious surprise. Being with Jack—talking, walking, making out—is a game changer for Simon. And Simon’s company certainly…eases the pain of recovery for Jack. But making a real relationship work once Jack’s cast comes off will mean compromise, understanding and lots of love.

Better Than People is a read that got me right in the feels. Simon has anxiety, not the mild anxiety that breathing exorcises and Prozac can necessarily solve. I felt like I really got to know him, and a better understanding of what people dealing with that type of anxiety really go through on a daily basis. I related to Jack, and could understand his frustration at needing help and his hurt cause by a friend's betrayal. His isolating himself and pushing away those that wanted to help and stay close was something I would have done in the same situation. Seeing these two find each other, and not only better understand themselves, but help each other find their own strengths, was lovely to read. Yes, there were moments that made me want to shout at the characters, but those moments made everything even more real. I was left hoping the best for these two, and wanting to know more about the secondary characters, and things in the town that were brought up in the story. I hope for more from the author in the near future.

Better Than People is an emotional romance that stayed with me long after finishing the book.

Book Review: Komi Can't Communicate, Vol. 1, by Tomohito Oda

Komi Can't Communicate, Vol. 1, by Tomohito Oda is a young adult magna. The journey to 100 friends begins with a single conversation. Socially anxious high school student Shoko Komi’s greatest dream is to make some friends, but everyone at school mistakes her crippling social anxiety for cool reserve! With the whole student body keeping their distance and Komi unable to utter a single word, friendship might be forever beyond her reach. Timid Tadano is a total wallflower, and that’s just the way he likes it. But all that changes when he finds himself alone in a classroom on the first day of high school with the legendary Komi. He quickly realizes she isn’t aloof—she’s just super awkward. Now he’s made it his mission to help her on her quest to make 100 friends!

Komi Can't Communicate is a graphic novel about finding your place in school, and I really like that it shows how different the way people feel can be from how they are perceived by others. I think readers of all ages can identify with Tadano on some level. He just wants to get through school unscathed, but things are not all that simple. In real life they never are either. Befriending Komi might not be good for flying under the radar, but it does help her start toward her own goals for school. I really liked that we get to see multiple perspectives, which gives the reader a bit of room to wonder how much of the story might be different from another view, and how much of their own worries or fears are fueled by similar assumptions and misperceptions. Aside from all that heavy stuff, there was also a good deal of humor and funny moments, and I found the read engaging and entertaining. I enjoyed the artwork very much, and think the line work did a great deal to add to the emotion and overall story through out. I thought the cast of major characters was well done and fun, and I look forward to seeing more. I did find the ending a bit abrupt, like maybe the last couple pages and back cover were missing from my digital copy, but that could have just been a clever hook to make me want the next installment even more. 

Komi Can't Communicate is a fun and engaging read. I think most middle schoolers through adults would find something entertaining and relatable in the read. 

Book Review: Bird Brain: Comics About Mental Health, Starring Pigeons by Chuck Mullin

Bird Brain: Comics About Mental Health, Starring Pigeons by Chuck Mullin is a collection of brutally honest, brilliantly weird comics exploring what it’s like to live with mental illness, using pigeons. When Chuck Mullin began experiencing anxiety and depression as a teenager, she started drawing comics to help her make sense of the rollercoaster. Eventually, she found that pigeons—lovably quirky, yet universally reviled creatures—were the ideal subjects of a comic about mental illness. The book is organized in three sections—"Bad Times," "Relationships," and "Positivity"—and featuring several short essays about the author’s experiences. 

Bird Brain is a comic collection that I related to on some levels, and not so much on others (I am more of an emotion stuffer than a crier), because we are all different. I loved how honest Mullin is about how she has felt, and the changes that she has made in her life. Like Mullin I have never shared the disdain for pigeons, and find them fun and cute. I liked the stories she shared, and the artwork. I think the only thing I might have changed is the inclusion of resources, like hotlines or online communities, that readers might use for support if they want or need some connection. However, since the book was originally published in the UK, I understand that it would take getting some different information for each publishing market.

The acknowledgement that self love and the love of others is not mutually exclusive, and that improving mental health is a journey, was important to me. So many of the platitudes people throw at people dealing with any kind of mental distress (clinical or situational)  are more harmful than helpful- because if people could just smile and feel better don't you think they would? If only it were so easy. I also like that Mullin points out that medication can be part of the solution- but is not the only part and is not for everyone. Side effects and allergies can make medication more problematic than what they are supposed to help, but if he right dose of the right med is found it can make life significantly better for some. I really love the clear point that we are all different, and effect to different therapies and tools accordingly- working with a professional to find the right combination is important and can very greatly depending on the person. 

Bird Brain is an honest and relatable collection that will speak to anyone that has suffered through anxiety and/or depression. I think it would also be a great read for those with loved ones that are dealing with them to help them understand what it feels like. 

Early Book Review: The Escape Manual for Introverts by Katie Vaz

The Escape Manual for Introverts by Katie Vaz is currently scheduled for release on August 6 2019. Trapped in an airplane seated next to a chatterbox? Are you hosting a dinner party with people who just won't leave? Katie Vaz has the key to your escape. The Escape Manual for Introverts guides readers through different scenarios with themed chapters ("Friends," "Relatives," "Strangers," etc.). Each chapter covers a range of situations, from an invitation to karaoke night to group lunchtime. And she offers a number of escapes for each scenario: bringing odoriferous foods to lunch for a while, having a pet (real or imagined) that "requires" frequent check-ins, and even investing in a jet pack. This book features Vaz's full-page illustrated spreads, hand-lettering, and spot illustrations. From the silly to the sincere, Vaz's clever, hilarious escape plans and bizarre excuses speak to the introvert in all of us. 

The Escape Manual for Introverts is a funny look at how to avoid social interaction when you really feel the need to be alone and recharge. As an introvert that works with the public, I often seek alone time for my off duty hours. Thankfully those closest to me are well aware, and understand my enjoyment of a cup of tea and a good book rather than getting dressed up and going out on the town. This book offers a variety of situations an introvert might feel the desire to escape from and offers some suggests that will help mitigate the small talk and awkward moments. I like that the situations and responses are organized by who you might be interacting with. Some of the suggestions are standard behavior for some of us already, such as bonding with the pets or "helping" in the kitchen to stay busy and out of the fray. Others are great, and slightly more involved- such as finding a cause to volunteer with to help avoid attending situations all together. I both love and dislike this solution. I love it- because getting out and doing good is fabulous, however it could just get you in more situations you might need to avoid- so choose wisely. I do not want to give away any more of the suggestions- because I might need them. The art style is fun, and matches the voice of the book well. 

The Escape Manual for Introverts was a read that I really enjoyed and identified with on several levels. I think introverts, and those that love them, will all enjoy this book.

Book Review: Slothilda: Living the Sloth Life by Dante Fabiero

Slothilda: Living the Sloth Life is a collection of comics by Dante Fabiero. Are you a fan of carbs, the internet, and naps? Slothilda is your spirit animal! From former Simpsons animator Dante Fabiero comes this all-too-real comic series about an adorable little sloth who's driven by her desire for self-improvement. Slothilda explores an inner conflict we can all relate to―the desire to succeed and grow, while paradoxically dealing with the ever present temptation to sloth. With themes related to work, fitness, food, shopping, and pets―this book shows that you're not the only sloth at heart.

Living the Sloth Life is a cute, fun read. I had not seen the comics from the blog previously, so it was all new to me. I related to some of the images and thoughts, but not all, which  is usually the case with collections. However, I really like the artwork, I thought Slothilda was very cute. I liked the inherent honest the author has in sharing the desire we all have to eat and rest as often as we want, and the over exaggeration of the lack of motivation made it funny while making the reader feel better about the things they do and their choices. I am feeling much more accomplished with the amount of work, cleaning, and reasonably healthy eating I do after seeing the sloth version of such activities.

Calm the F@ck Down: How to Control What You Can and Accept What You Can't So You Can Stop Freaking Out and Get On With Your Life by Sarah Knight is a self help book for those with too much anxiety in their lives. It is a no-f*cks-given guide to taming anxiety and taking control of your life. Do you spend more time worrying about problems than solving them? Do you let unexpected difficulties ruin your day and do "what ifs" keep you up at night? Sounds like you need to CALM THE F*CK DOWN. Just because things are falling apart doesn't mean YOU can't pull it together. Calm the F*ck Down explains:The Four Faces of Freaking Out--and their Flipsides How to accept what you can't control, Productive Helpful Effective Worrying (PHEW)The Three Principles of Dealing With It, and more.

Calm the F@ck Down is a down to earth, honest book that acknowledges the reality of both anxiety disorders and the situational anxiety. I like that the author not only recognizes the existence and validity of the anxiety readers might be struggling, but makes it clear that she has been there and not only understands what readers might be feeling but makes it clear that those emotions are real, and not something that ignoring or pretending that they do not exist will help. Knight has struggled with anxiety and found tools that work for her, and shares those tools, her experiences, and hope with readers that they can find tools that will work for them. 

I really enjoyed the blunt and honest talk, and thought the regular reminders that she is not a doctor but is sharing what works for her in hopes it can help others with plenty of support for seeing a professional for help was well done and might give someone the encouragement to seek help if they need it. This balance of suggestions and support is pretty perfect. I also enjoyed the humor that is liberally sprinkled through the book, I find the ability to laugh at myself, and situations, to be helpful to me and it seems that Knight feels the same way. I think this book is a helpful and fun read for those that deal with anxiety (both capital A and lowercase, situation anxiety) to focus their energy and effort in productive ways.
